INTRODUCTION

The following is a brief history of the Sovereign Order of Saint John, a religious order established in medieval times to serve the needs of Christian pilgrims especially the sick and the poor. Over the centuries that followed, in a glorious saga of sacrifice and heroism which words cannot adequately describe, these holy monks not only fulfilled their initial mission, but in addition became the greatest defenders of Christendom.

This distinguished religious-military order, which became the most famous and revered order of knighthood in all of history, continues in existence nine and one-half centuries after its establishment in the Holy Land during the 11th century, just prior to the time of the Crusades.

It is hoped that this short narrative will provide an understanding of the origin, nature, historical continuity, purpose, authority and privileges of the Order of Saint John, as well as the requirements for membership in this noble, sovereign Order.

It is impossible to compress 950 years of history into a few written pages. Nevertheless, it is our hope that this short history will be sufficient to inspire you, the reader, rekindle your ideals, animate your faith and spirituality, and perhaps motivate you to assist the Sovereign Order in the urgent and necessary work of rebuilding a Christian Society in this impious, profane and decadent age.
